About the CESMI conference

It started with a question.

How can the Norwegian-American Chamber of Commerce in Southern California, (NACC SoCal) develop exciting business and research opportunities between industries that are especially strong in both California and Norway?

That may seem difficult.

On the other hand, Norway and California have long coastlines, and have strong sustainability profiles. The logical choice was therefore to focus on industries developing or pushing for environmentally sustainable solutions for the maritime industry. The maritime industry includes both ocean and ports, (ocean—shore).

Interestingly, California and Norway complement each other nicely here. Their industries have won prestigious awards:

• California and the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach for its
"Greening of the Ports" efforts.

• Norway for its FellowSHIP initiatives.

To get the experts together from Norway and California, it was decided to set up a conference in California, and name it Creating an Environmentally Sustainable Maritime Industry (CESMI) — from Ocean to Shore.

As the CESMI concept developed, it became clear that CESMI is a conference that should also include players beyond California and Norway.

On the North American side, focus is now on the full west coast from San Diego, Canada, and Alaska.

On the European side, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Sweden, and Finland are included.

There are also discussions with players in Asia with strong environmental sustainability focus, such as Singapore, Korea, and Japan.

The CESMI conference will take place in Los Angeles, California, at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel at the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro over two days, April 30 and May 1, 2015.

The conference will include senior level, technology experts, and innovators from large ports, shipping companies, ship builders, ship systems, port cargo handling systems, power systems - and ocean power developers, research organizations, maritime industry organizations, and Government. As well as ship owners and industry leaders.
